The Practical Driving Test

The Driving Standards Agency recommends that most learners take at least 45 hours of professional tuition as well as at least 20 hours with friends and family. Of course since all learners are different and learn in different ways, some will pass much more quickly than others. Remember quality tuition from the start will help keep the number of hours required to a minimum.

Your practical driving test will start with an eyesight check and a vehicle safety question. (all listed on the pupils page above). The actual driving part of your test will last approximately 40 minutes.

Throughout the test, your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving as well as competent use of the car controls, road procedure, judgement and anticipation, including when you are carrying out one of the set reversing exercises. You may also be asked to carry out a controlled stop exercise (emergency stop).

Independant Driving

During the test you will have a section of 'independent driving', in this section you will be asked to follow signs to a particular location or follow a sat nav for approximately 20 minutes, being assessed on how well you deal with driving without direction from the examiner.

Driving can be a very enjoyable experience but passing your test is only the first step in learning to drive.

It is important to remember that we teach safe driving for life not just so that you pass your driving test.

You need to know how to drive safely because you as a driver are responsible for making decisions that can affect other people's lives as well as your own.
